The Department of Vehicles and Fundamentals of Machine Design was established on January 1, 2010, as a result of the reorganization of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Lodz University of Technology.
Since October 2, 2017, the Department has been headed by Professor TUL Damian Batory Ph.D., D.Sc.
Currently, the Department comprises two research groups: the Fundamentals of Machine Design Research Group and the Vehicle Research Group.
Below, we present a brief history of the Department:
Until October 1, 2017, the Department of Vehicles and Fundamentals of Machine Design consisted of three separate divisions, which were the historical successors of previously existing organizational units: the Division of Fundamentals of Machine Design, the Division of Vehicles, and the Division of Working Machines, Drives and Control Systems.
The first two of these divisions continue to operate today as research groups.

History of the Vehicle Research Group
1970 The Institute of Vehicles was established at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Lodz University of Technology on September 1, 1970, following the merger of three existing departments: the Department of Automotive Engineering, the Department of Reciprocating Heat Engines, and the Department of Automotive Engines.
The Institute was headed by the following directors:
1970–1976 Prof. Jerzy Werner, PhD, DSc
1976–1983 Prof. Jerzy Lanzendoerfer, PhD, DSc
1983–2004 Prof. Cezary Szczepaniak, PhD, DSc
2004–2010 Prof. Zbigniew Pawelski, PhD, DSc
2007 The Institute of Vehicles, Machine Design and Operation was established through the merger of the Institute of Vehicles and the Department of Machine Design and Operation (Director: Prof. Zbigniew Pawelski, PhD, DSc).
2010 The Department of Vehicles and Fundamentals of Machine Design was established, headed by Prof. Zbigniew Pawelski, PhD, DSc. The Department comprised two divisions:
- Division of Vehicles (Head: Andrzej Szosland, PhD, DSc, Associate Professor at Lodz University of Technology).
- Division of Fundamentals of Machine Design (Head: Włodzimierz Świderski, PhD, DSc, Associate Professor at Lodz University of Technology).
2017 The Division of Vehicles was reorganized into a research group.
History of the Division of Working Machines, Drives and Control Systems
2003 The Department of Working Machines, Drives and Control Systems was established following the reorganization of the Institute of Machine Design (Head: Prof. Jerzy Tomczyk, PhD, DSc).
2007 In October 2007, Jacek Cink, PhD, DSc, Associate Professor, became Head of the Department.
2012 In November 2012, the Division of Working Machines, Drives and Control Systems was established within the Department of Vehicles and Fundamentals of Machine Design (Head: Jacek Cink, PhD, DSc, Associate Professor).
2017 As part of the reorganization of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, on September 25, 2017, the Division was transformed into a research group operating within the Institute of Machine Tools and Production Engineering.
